St. Ronan's
Future Band - Gold Award winners at Brass in the Park 2005

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
In the late eighties, when the Band was at a low ebb with only a handful
of players, it was decided to try and re-recruit former members, and
also to restart the Junior Band. A closer relationship with the local
school brought in many youngsters willing to be taught the art of brass
band playing. As with all things new, there was a good response. A few
did not rise to the challenges presented and left. This left a few dedicated
"learners."
After the first couple of years at least six juniors were promoted to
the senior band. These members did not leave the junior band but were
encouraged to come along and create a band in their own right. This
was also their chance to play solo parts and perform in public.
There are many activities for youngsters, from computer games to organised
sports so we want to make learning enjoyable. It is also stressed, that
regular practice is essential. The group is now in great demand, becoming
well known in the town. This encourages more youngsters to take up brass
playing.
This is now the main feeder to the senior band, with major concerts
and contests being undertaken. Indeed, on the two occasions that the
band has played at the British Championships (1999 and 2003) there were
no less than eight ex-junior members on stage. Without the commitment
and dedication of both tutors and young players this would not have
been possible.
Over the last five years, the Band has also sponsored the participation
of you players from its ranks in the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland.
In 2003 the group was re-named "St. Ronan's Future Band" and is now
conducted by David Robb who holds the
Scottish Arts Council funded post of Youth Development Co-ordinator.
The beginners section, St. Ronan's Training Band, is led by Keith
Belleville, Leslie Smith and Bob Heaney.
Anybody interested in learning a brass or percussion instrument is encouraged
to contact Keith Belleville.
