Old Hawick Page Ten

Hawick Town Hall

Hawick Town Hall, looking down Cross Wynd, named after the cross which stood in the centre of the High Street at the bottom of this hill. (1880)

Crumaugh Road

A view of Hawick from Crumhaughhill, the haugh is at the base of this hill,
and the crum (which means crooked in Gaelic) is the bend in the river Teviot at Parkdail,
another example of the use of this word is Ancrum situated at the bend in the river Ale. (1958)

Sandbed

This is the Sandbed in Hawick, after much discussion we think the procession is for the opening of Hawick's Water Works in 1861,
and also the laying of the Foundation stone for the new Corn Exchange on the same day by the Duke of Buccleuch.

The Chase

The Cornets Chase at the Nipknowes, don't know the date but there are horse and carts visible on the Vertish Hill.

25 High Street Hawick

Number Twenty Five High Street Hawick, this building is now occupied by Dolland and Aitchison Opticians. (1860)

Mid Row

This is the "Auld Mid Raw" as featured elsewhere in these pages, now a garden area in Drumlanrig Square. (1860)
