Window On Hawick

(Week ending Friday 21 July 2000)

'Staney Brae' at the Backdamgate, the area behind the old Crown Hotel has been redeveloped
and there is now an anvil marking the spot of the old Blacksmiths at the foot of the brae.
We will bring you some photos of that area in the near future.

I have put these photos side by side as they are so alike, but 60 years apart. The old Corn Mill and St Mary's Church are still the same, but the houses in the old photo are gone to make way for the modern houses that are there now.

This is where Hogg's Mill used to stand, it was destroyed by fire at the end of 1999
and demolished at the beginning of this year.

This is Mart Street from the old railway embankment at the end of Union Street.

Same again showing the site of the old Auction Mart now occupied by Safeway.

The way to Ettrick Graphics, Linden Crescent or A.K.A. 'killin'-hoose brae' as there was a slaughter house
in the top right corner at one time, it is now flats for the elderly.
This street is so called because of the Lime (or Linden) trees that grew there.
